3 Syrian refugees discovered in refrigerated truck in the Basque region

Three Syrian men were found locked in a refrigerated food truck Tuesday, near the Basque town of Hernani. They were suffering from hypothermia and a lack of oxygen. 

 

The discovery was made at a gas station near the town of Hernani, where a driver pulled up next to the truck and heard banging and shouting coming from the back of the vehicle.

Reportedly the truck had originated in Poland but its last stop was in Belgium, where the truck was reloading fruit produce, bound for MercaMadrid in Spain's capital city.

The three refugees are all in their thirties and believed by Basque police to be Syrian nationals. On taking them out of the truck, the men were immediately hospitalized with hypothermia, but are believed to be doing well and are recovering.

The Basque regional police force have opened an investigation in an effort to determine whether the driver was aware that the Syrian refugees were in the back of his truck, where the temperature was reportedly only around 10 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile Spain has agreed to take on 14,900 Syrian refugees under an EU agreement, where the migrants will be relocated from Greece, Hungary and Italy. The first refugees are due to arrive early in October this year.

This quota was originally rejected by the Spanish government, but after citizens lobbied in protest, it was agreed to take them on. According to The Local, despite the economic crisis in the country, over 100 local councils across Spain have now declared themselves "refugee friendly" with thousands of people signing up to welcome them into their homes.

Spanish twins' first touch goes viral on YouTube (video)

Daniel and María joined hands shortly after their birth in a hospital in Guipúzcoa in the Basque Country of Spain. The result of this union took the Internet by storm.

 

According to the Basque daily newspaper Diario Vasco, Daniel and María were no ordinary twins, right from the start. Although they are the result of a healthy pregnancy, and were probably able to feel each other's presence in the womb, they could not physically touch each other, due to being in separate amniotic sacs.

 

However, nothing in their nine months of getting ready for the world suggested that they would become famous at birth. 

 

During the mother's delivery, the babies were in a breech position, making the doctors at the Guipúzcoa Hospital decide to deliver them by caesarean section. Once they were born, the babies were placed side by side in a thermal cot. 

 

At this point, the doctors and nurses were amazed and captivated by what they saw - the newborn siblings joined hands. The twins' father, Mario said: "They [the staff] asked for my mobile phone because they wanted to take a beautiful photo." And apparently in the end they took three images of the twins.

 

The photos show Daniel and María turned away from each other and still unable to see. The babies were awaiting the first touch from their mother, but had already joined their hands. 

 

Dr. Rodríguez asked the parents for permission to hang the photo in his office saying, "I've seen a lot of births and I've seen a lot of newborns but I've never seen that before."

 

Four months down the line, father Mario says his babies , "don't hold hands any more but when they see each other they smile."

 

"The day they held hands they signed a contract to be together forever."
