Emergency response overkill on the Costa del Sol, Spain

You know things are quiet when this kind of thing happens. Roughly 25 emergency vehicles responded to one little crime this afternoon, at high speed, with sirens blaring.

There I was, crossing the road at a pedestrian crossing, minding my own business, when bee-bah-bee-bah, I nearly get wiped out by a police tow truck. I scrambled to the pavement safely, wondering what kind of emergency tow could possibly be required that needs sirens and such high speed?

Teenage prank turns into 'kidnapping' scare

When a teenage girl decided to play a prank on her father, things went terribly wrong, as a Spanish police officer stopped his vehicle and pulled a gun on him. However, it could have been much, much worse.

A 13-year-old girl in Valencia, Spain decided to play a silly and childish joke on her dad. She held up a sign in the car, while they were driving along, which read: "Help. I'm being kidnapped."

 

Her father had no idea what she was doing, but when an off-duty Spanish Civil Guard officer got a glimpse of the sign he did not hesitate in his attempts to "rescue" the poor girl.

 

He swerved his car so as to block and force the alleged kidnapper's vehicle to stop. The officer then jumped out of the vehicle and pointed a gun at the girl's father's head, ordering him out of the vehicle, with hands on head.

 

The shocked father obeyed, all the time assuring the officer that he was the father of the girl.

 

It didn't take too long for the teenager to admit to the joke. However, the off-duty officer had already alerted the authorities to what he thought was a serious incident, which then drew a large deployment of police officers to the scene.

 

Once it had been established that they were, indeed, father and daughter, they were both allowed to leave the scene with no charge.

 

However, its pretty certain the teenage prankster will have quite a bit of explaining to do.

 

This isn't the only time that a faked kidnapping has gone wrong in Spain, as Digital Journal reported recently on a stag night prank that ended up in the Madrid headlines as an armed kidnapping.

Call the Police, I missed the concert!

Turns out Sting was in Marbella, just down the road, and I had no idea.

The British singer, with a spectacular career spanning three decades, wowed fans with renditions of his best loved hits, including Roxanne, Every Breath You Take and So Lonely.

Former Police frontman, Sting, performed in Marbella as part of his latest tour which will take in 60 cities around the world.

The concert was held on June 30 in the Puente Romano Tennis Club.  Damn.

Spanish police bust 2 Chinese sex slave rings in Madrid

Spanish police stated on Monday that two rival Chinese sex rings have been busted in Madrid. The rings brought women, including minors, from China with the promise of high-paying jobs.

The sex rings then forced the women into prostitution.

The sting operation, which was carried out in cooperation with French police, has resulted in the arrest of 26 suspects in Spain and 25 in France as well as "the liberation of 25 victims", according to a police statement.

The statement further read:

"The victims, some of them minors, were recruited in their homeland with the promise of a job in Spain with a monthly salary of over €4,000 ($5,000)."

The Chinese women arrived in Spain on fake visas and were charged between €12,000 and €14,000 ($15,600 and $18,200) for the trip, a portion of which had to be paid before they left China.

Rather than the promised high-paid job, once in Spain their passports were seized by the rings and the women were kept in tiny, windowless rooms in Parla, a southern Madrid suburb.

Police stated that the women were then forced into prostitution for at least a year and had to turn over 40% of their income to the rings.

The police statement added that the two rival rings owned 11 properties, with a combined value of around €2.75 million. Officers seized €3,500 euros and 15,000 Chinese yuans (€1,800) in cash along with several weapons and four cars.

Illegal, unlicenced Chinese medicine seized by Spanish police

A spokesman for the Spanish police announced on Saturday that they had seized hundreds of thousands of packs of illegal medicines from China and India, including slimming products, erection aids and anabolic steroids.

The statement read that the Guardia Civil had "seized more than 250,000 units of illegal medicine, mostly related to erectile dysfunction, slimming and abortion practices."

Reportedly around a quarter of the seized unlicensed and illegal drugs were from India and more than half were sourced from China, which the Guardia Civil state were mainly destined for the large Chinese community living in Spain.

The medicines were seized during three weeks of raids at airports and shops in Spain, following an operation in 30 countries which was coordinated by the international and European agencies Interpol and Europol.

26 websites selling the unauthorised medicines, which the police say are "potentially harmful to health" were shut down during the exercise.

Police also reported on June 23 that a network, selling sports doping products imported to Spain from Greece, China and Portugal, had been broken up. 84 people were arrested and hundreds of thousands of doses of anabolic steroids and other drugs seized.

Spanish police gear up for 'summer of crime' with extra staff

Spain is a pretty safe country to visit, with only one in every thousand tourists likely to be affected by petty crime. However, the country is deploying over 29,000 police officers to ensure tourists' safety and security during July and August.

The Interior Ministry in Spain has dubbed July 1st as the beginning of "Operation Summer," which will see an additional 1,341 new police officers hitting the beat across Spain.

 

These additional forces will be spread over the regions of Andalucía, Asturias, Canary Islands, Cantabria, Valencian Community, Galicia, Madrid, Murcia and the Balearic Islands. 

 

"Spain is a safe country", Francisco Martínez, Spain’s Secretary of State Security, told online daily 20 Minutos. 

 

"Ensuring tourism safety guarantees a higher quality of tourism."

 

While less than one in every thousand tourists are likely to be affected by crime, the number of petty thefts rises during the summer months, especially in the coastal areas. 

 

For example, Spain's Interior Ministry says that 57 percent of robberies in the Málaga province happens during the months of July and August. A veteran police officer told La Opinion de Málaga, "These thieves thrive in the busy streets of the Costa del Sol during the high season."

 

"They are the same ones who prey on shoppers during Christmas or holidaymakers during Easter week."

 

In many cases, pickpockets pretend to be tourists, so as to blend in with the crowd, and have been known to spend a week or two in every tourist hotspot. Tourists should always be wary of strangers approaching them with flowers, as these people, normally women, are likely to try and take a euro or ten from their wallet while "selling" them a flower.
