New Ibiza restaurant to be world's most expensive at €1,500 a head

If you are feeling "flush" on your vacation in Spain's party capital Ibiza this summer, you will be able to splash out on a truly exclusive meal at a mere 1,500 euros per person. That is around $2,075 for those of you in the U.S. of A.

If you are wondering what on earth you would get for this exorbitant fee, diners at the SubliMotion restaurant at the upcoming Hard Rock Hotel Ibiza in Spain's Balearic Islands will be treated to the very latest in “avant-garde gastronomy” in a literal "theater to the senses."

The restaurant, opening on June 1, will be in the tender, expert hands of Paco Roncero, a master chef with two Michelin stars and three Repsol Suns under his belt, previously at "La Terraza del Casino de Madrid."

You will be in limited company, as SubliMotion only serves 12 guests per night. You and the other 11 guests can indulge in a "gastro-sensory" spectacle which includes not only excellent gourmet dishes, but also lights, sounds and levitating dinner plates. A unique experience that "transcends dining."

Of course there is also "location, location, location," as the restaurant will be found at Ibiza’s emblematic Playa d’en Bossa.

While the language is Spanish, the video below shows the planning stages of the restaurant. Introduced by Paco Roncero, it gives an idea of the decor and special effects that will be used, all backed by beautiful music from the music collective (and beach bar), Cafe del Mar (the "head office" of which is also in Ibiza incidentally).

Of interest is the fact that Spain already has the best restaurant in the world, after the prestigious UK magazine Restaurant gave the award to the Celler de Can Roca restaurant in Girona.

There is also Spain's most exclusive restaurant in Barcelona, which only serves one group per night. Mercès One offers a unique experience whereby guests can choose not only the cuisine, but also the decor to go along with it.

By the way, if SubliMotion is a tad too expensive for your tastes, the hotel is also offering a branch of the famous Estado Puro restaurants (Pure State), which already has two locations in Madrid. This restaurant will offer creative cuisine at more affordable prices and can seat up to 300 diners.

Oh yes, and if "party capital of the world" sounds a bit too hectic for your vacation, while the capital city on the island of Ibiza is famous for its incredible dining and nightlife, the island does also offer beautiful and traditional rural landscapes and villages for your more peaceful pleasure, all within easy driving distance of Ibiza city.

Spain's most exclusive restaurant has just one table

Well, to be more accurate, the restaurant will serve only one group of diners at a time and has only one chef, the owner, Antonio Cornejo.

This unique restaurant is called Mercès One and is located in Barcelona.

When there is availability, it's possible for clients to book not only the meals of their choice, but also the décor, crockery and cutlery that they prefer to go with it.

It seems the restaurant is popular, so not only is it essential to prebook, but it can be a little difficult, too. However, a spokesperson for the restaurant told the English language news website The Local, "We're busy, but there are still plenty of free nights available." If clients are flexible with their dates, no problem.

If you are lucky enough to book an evening at the restaurant, you will find there is a variety of interior designs to choose from, ranging from modern to romantic to even minimalistic. Choose your preferred crockery and cutlery, table linen, the music you would like to hear and, of course, the dishes to enjoy as well as the drinks.

All these options can be booked online on the restaurant's website. If the number of choices get a bit too much, Cornejo says that guests can leave everything in his most capable hands.

As to the cost, menu prices average €60 (or $83) per person, excluding the wine, and the restaurant can seat parties of up to 22 people at a time.

Cornejo told the Spanish daily newspaper El Mundo that he has over 12 years of experience in the catering industry, but enjoys the fact that now he is getting a chance to develop his creative side by concentrating on just one set of clients per night. Not only that, but he has 365 chances of doing just that.

Crisis claims another victim as famous Can Fabes restaurant to close it's doors

A restaurant close to Barcelona, famed for elevating Catalan cuisine to new heights, will be closing down, two years after losing the founding chef and a coveted third Michelin star.

El Racó de Can Fabes is a restaurant located in Sant Celoni in the Montseny hills north of Barcelona, Spain, founded by chef Santi Santamaria.

Rooted in local tradition, Santamaria's gastronomic offerings elevated Catalan cuisine to the pinnacle of gastronomy and it was one of the first Spanish restaurants to be awarded a Michelin star. The restaurant has been rated with three Michelin stars each year since 1994.

However one star was lost in November 2011, just nine months after the death of the founder, Santamaria of a heart attack at the age of 53 in the kitchen of a restaurant he had just opened in Singapore.

Regina Santamaria, the founder's daughter, took over the restaurant and hired a new chef, Xavier Pellicer, who made changes to the menu and at the beginning of 2013, Pellicer left the restaurant.

Now it seems the restaurant has to give up and close down. In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Santamaria family, who founded Can Fabes in 1981, said the restaurant is the latest victim of Spain's stinging economic crisis.

"In these difficult times for restaurants in our country, Can Fabes does not have the necessary economic viability to pursue a project based on excellence," the statement read.

"We have decided to put an end to one of the brightest chapters in Catalan and European cuisine of the past 25 years," it added.

According to Miss Santamaria, the decision to close the restaurant was "very hard and very sad".

"We cannot carry on, we have tried to save it by every means possible, but it hasn't worked. Now our goal is to end this chapter with our head held high."

The restaurant will serve its last meals on August 31, 2013.

At present, there are seven Michelin three-star restaurants and 19 two-star eateries in Spain, including Can Fabes.

The top spot was taken this year by another Catalan restaurant, El Celler de Can Roca, recently voted the best restaurant in the world in the 2013 World's 50 Best list, released by Restaurant magazine.

Indulge in some genuine Thai cuisine for a real treat during your holiday on the Costa del Sol, Spain. Healthy, tasty, quick and convenient meals - on the spot, for home delivery or to take away.

Newly opened in the town of Fuengirola is a great Thai restaurant and take away, called "padthaiwok".

The business is owned by a couple from Thailand and run by an efficient staff who speak both English and Spanish.

The writer of this article is a newly-minted vegetarian, but there was no problem with the menu, with so much choice available to anyone who prefers not to eat meat. Meat- and seafood-eaters, of course, have plenty to choose from too!

With fresh ingredients, cooked on demand, the meals are delicious and healthy too. Service is both quick and friendly.

The writer ordered the vegetarian spring rolls - very tasty, if maybe a tad expensive for two such small pieces at 2.90 euros... but...
